Today Hikaru, his (the character's, Sulu's) first name, comes true; it means "shining".
I met George Takei when I was twelve or thirteen at a con, and had him read my name at a costume contest. I didn't know, well, that he's gay, but after so many, many years....it must be a release for him to say this finally.
Note: this is, in all likelihood, the one and only revelation to confirm the demented worldview of legions of aging Star Trek slash maniacs. Unless Leonard, up in Nevada City, has something he's so not telling us.
Well, George used to be a regular at the "clubs" up in San Francisco. Quite the dancer I've been told. The only thing I would find more shocking than this would be if Shatner actually came out to the world that he wears a rug...
Not sure I could handle that...
But as George said, he's never been officially in the closet so much as he hasn't alerted the press and the world. Those people who were important to him and those in his world knew the truth and appreciated his forthrightness and quest for public service. He is, truly, one of the good people in this world.
