Wizards of the Coast open call for fiction novels

Note, they aren't looking for novels set in their game worlds, but "science fiction, fantasy, horror, alternate history, magic realism, or anything in-between."

That sounds like a totally possible idea, but I'd be worried about sending something in via the mail as I've never done that before. :/

It's not hard. I can talk you through it, I just did my first mail-in submission and did mondo huge amounts of research, cuz I'm anal about not wanting to make "dumb noob"mistakes.

I've got an idea for a fantasy novel that I've wanted to write for a long time that I might try to do. I have a science fiction idea as well, but i'm developing that separately and I'm thinking of trying to rpesent that to a friends rpg company.

Do they expect fancy paper for these sorts of things? I only have access to school printers at the moment.

Nope, standard 26 pound paper seems to be fine from what I've gathered. GOOD ink is the big concern, but less so now that so many home printers are as good quality as business ones used to be 10-12 years ago.

You want it to look professional, neat, and readable.

How much do the envelopes for sending that stuff cost? I know, probrably a dumb question but I don't know. :/

Depends on what you're sending. For a full manuscript, I used the priority mail boxes at the post office. 7.70 including the box and postage to anywhere in the US.

So, for less (like 3 chapters and a query letter), you can expect it will probably be less.

Huh. Interesting!

I note they seem to break with more usual manuscript formatting in their description. And interesting as well that they include that legal agreement for a submission.

Also, is this actually current? I see at the bottom of the page that the submission deadline is listed as March of THIS year?

Ah, thank you!

The legal document probably harkens back to their game side. It's standard form, from what I've seen to throw a "just because you sent in an idea where Character X does Y doesn't mean you have exclusive rights to profit from it when we do it" kind of thing.

Okay. It is, indeed, Interesting!

Though right now I don't have anything to send them anyway. Luna still has Faerie Blood! We'll see what happens perhaps if Luna winds up telling me no. :)

It's listing the deadline of March 2005 - is that an error?

Yes, I added the wrong page.

Bah. This is what I get for not having a novel finished and ready for submission. Or, in fact, started. Um. Or, even, really, in the planning stages.

Oh ho! Perhaps if my NaNoWriMo experience is a success I can send it to them! ;)
