On two unrelated projects...

If you have a favorite werewolf movie/book, please recommend it to me? Likewise with ones you hated?

I've just finished Canyons (interesting, but very "gross-graphic", not "dark-sensual-graphic" to me), Bitten (one of the best books I've read recently), Werewolves (The collection of short stories editted by Jane Yolen)...

Ditto with movie/books featuring courtesans, especially those set in Venice? I'm familiar with Dangerous Beauty, but looking to expand my experience with them...

Werewolf movies: I absolutely HATED Bad Moon or maybe it was Bad Moon Rising. I actually really liked Underworld.

Werewolf books: I liked Fool Moon, When Will You Rage and Drums around the Fire, but hated Wyrm Wolf.

Courtesans: Brotherhood of the Wolf. I loved Monica Belucci's character, who was unnamed in the U.S. theatrical release but is listed with a name in the credits and is named in the director's cut. Her character is Italian, although the movie is set in France.

totally in agreement on "Fool Moon" - about the only 'werewolf'-related thing I've liked...

*I* liked "Van Helsing" - it has werewolves - it may not be the *best ever* werewolf flick, but 'tis a fun ride. *g*

I quite liked the Underworld werewolves, too. Um. I don't, in general, like werewolves, partly because I think they're terribly overdone and rarely *well* done, so I'm not really *much* help. :)

As for courtesans, lemme know what you find. :)

Movies: Ginger Snaps (and to a lesser extent, Ginger Snaps 2) is _the_ werewolf movie. Dog Soldiers is a lot of fun, but it's more like Aliens or Predator, except the Big Bad is a pack of werewolves. It's been a while since I've seen American Werewolf in London, so I dunno there, but I understand that AWiParis is awful.

As for books: Laurel Hamilton's Blue Moon (as well as The Killing Dance and the Lunatic Cafe), and one of Tanya Huff's Blood [something] books has a great werewolf family in it.

James Spader is sexy.

One of my favorites that I never see mentioned is a Werewolf/historical fiction mixture; Silver Wolf by Alice Borchardt.
8th Century Rome. Werewolfiness. Heroine. Politics.

Favorites movies:
"Wolf" (starring jack nicholson), "American Werewolf in London", Dog Soldiers (they are making a sequel btw), Underworld, Van Helsing

TV Series:
"Werewolf" (back in the mid 80's. Main character was bitten by his friend, who he kills in defense but then is pinned for his murder. Goes on the road to find/kill the head werewolf to free himself from the curse.
"Wolf's Rain" series currently running on Cartoon Network on Saturday nights. Not really about werewolves but wolves that have the ability to appear as humans to avoid detection. Visuals and dialogue are top notch. One episode will hook you in.

Books:
"Bitten" by Kelly Armstrong, "Blue Moon", "Killing Dance" and "Lunatic Cafe'" by Laurell K Hamilton, "Prince of Wolves" by Susan Kinard (yeah, its a romance type but I liked some of the ideas in it)

*Terrible* werewolf book

Moon Dance, by S.P. Somtow. It's awful. I didn't finish it, it was so bad. I threw it in the *trash*, it was so bad.

And Peg points out that Rob missed a great werewolf T.V. show: Wolf Lake. There were only a few eps, but it was great. Lou Diamond Phillips and Graham Greene. Heh.

Jeez, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so.

I've had it out from the library and been trying to dig my way through it off and on (mostly off) for weeks. I keep thinking "wow, this is an interesting concept, but they handled it /terribly/".

I'll see if Pat can't dig up some copies of Wolf Lake! Thanks!

On courtesans, sort of

It's not really about courtesans, per se, but. The Inammorati, by Midori Snyder is an interesting "flavor" book, that might give you some good ideas. It's about commedia del arte, and such things.

Neat! I'll see if I can't find it! :)

If you can't find it, I have a copy...somewhere around here...<laugh> There are still boxes all over.

Oh, and if you haven't watched it already, watch Firefly. One of the characters is a courtesan, and she's awesome. :)
