A friend's recent post about stupid people suing other people because they weren't sufficiently protected from taking stupid actions reminded me of this. I think a lot of what's wrong with the human race would be solved if stupidity was more often a fatal condition:

“That which they call The End was inevitable, or so I have been taught.

Inevitable and long, long overdue.

In a natural world, when the prey is abundant, the predators multiply. When the deer herds are thick, the wolf packs will grow to take advantage of this rich food source. But, when times are lean, their numbers drop off again. A wolf pack will not, in a natural setting, destroy every last deer in a forest. As prey become scarce, hunting gets harder. More of the pack grows weaker, and the strongest will eat, leaving the ill or elderly, the weak or lame to return to the cycle. The prey and the predator ebb and flow in an every changing dance.

Throughout man’s history, he has struggled to overcome this natural cycle. Through technology, more and more of the human lame and ill survived, more of their elderly lived past their due years, but perhaps most importantly, the weak were not culled from the pack. They went on, and bred with other weaklings, resulting in generation upon generation where the human race did not grow stronger as nature intended, but weaker and more flawed until the inevitable finally could not be prevented any longer.

The End came.”
