I'm making plans to attend the Writer's Weekend in Seatac in late July (22nd-25th)... Guest writers? Jim Butcher and Jacqueline Carey.
It looks like it will be a great weekend for learning about the craft and meeting people. I told Pat that it's a bit scary because thus far I've done all my writing in a cave (my home)... I have never met anyone that I write for (Renaissance Magazine is centered out of Connecticut, and White Wolf is located in Georgia (at least their home base. I don't know where my editors actually live.) I haven't taken anything but the basic "English" classes in college, and they ended before I really started writing professionally. (still makes me feel pretentious to even use those words together in reference to myself!)
So, this will be my big "I am a writer" debut... I won't have anything actually on the shelf by the time the conference hits, but I'll be working on my second novel for publication (Both write-for-hire) and am working on my first just for me, as well..
I wish I knew more about the industry and how editors/agents view "write for hire" novelists... It would help me prepare to make the jump from one market to the other...
