The Valkyrie didn't cough last night, but woke up coughing again this morning. She's staying home again today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just the dregs of her cold, and that tomorrow she'll be fine. That happens some times, right? A cold gets worse for a day before it gets better, as the mucus starts to congeal and such? (It's saying something about the general state of my mental facilities right now that I don't even hesitate to write "mucus" and "congeal" in the same sentence in an unfiltered post any more.)

In a slightly bizarre side note, the lady across teh street *Who I barely know... we've spoken maybe two or three times in the year and a half we've lived here) sent her husband over today to invite me to come play mahjong with her and her friends. They apparently meet at her house every Tuesday and play mahjong from 9am to noon, or sometimes until later in the afternoon. I know I'm past the 40-year mark, but things like this make me feel very strange. I know she's in her 60s, and I'm anticipating that most of the other ladies are too. Will I feel like the kid being invited up from the kids' table at Thanksgiving? I don't know. But I like games, and I've always wanted to learn how to play mahjong (something about the tactile nature of the cool ceramic tiles) so in my sleep-deprived and stress-induced state, I said yes.

I think I'll go jump in the shower and put on a pretty face, and see about maybe running to the market to pick up some tea biscuits or something nice to share for nibblies.

I picked up mahjongg a few weeks ago at Arisia, of all places. I quite enjoyed it; it helped that I've played enough tile-matching solitaire games using the same art that I could avoid that part of the learning curve.

Well, it's not cold related but I know every time I quit smoking I cough like normal for a few days then don't cough for a day or two then I finally spend a week coughing really violently while my lungs evacuate the congealed crap that has been in the bottom. I suspect that your 'little' one ( cripes, she was 6 the last time I saw her? I know she was Blues Clues age :) ) is experiencing the same thing.

And if no one has mentioned it lately, you are a great mommy.

Personally, I would be totally down with playing mahjong with the neighborhood biddies, but I am weird that way.

Thanks, hon. I'm hoping that's what this is. Between doubting doctors, skeptical school staff and self-doubt, I'm feeling like a pretty crappy mom. If it was something hard and cold diagnosed, that would be one thing, but weeks/months of fighting this "I know it's a cough, but it's not "right"!" has just been draining.

The current strain of the cold has a nasty, persistent cough that lingers long after the fever breaks.

Myself and a few co-workers have been coughing for two months after we've recovered.

Back east I learned how to play mahj, a hugely social game, and enjoyed it. I hope they don't smoke, although you willhave the chance to learn how to smoke a ciggy with an inch of ash hanging off it if they do.

I never could figure that out.
Back east it's called "mahj" by blue-haired Episcopalian and Jewish ladies. :D

Hope miss V improves.

My cold, which is STILL stubbornly hanging on...did that...I was better one day...worse the next....but as is turns out, that last better worse thing was the hump and I am doing much better now.

As to Mahjong...I love the game, although I am not sure how to play it in groups. I am sure you will make the group feel more alive than it's felt in decades. GO GIRL!!!

ok, so this is weird, but...

My grandma had a bed with a high headboard. When you get to that last lingering cough as a little kid, if you're staying with the grandparents, they prop the ironing board on the headboard and lay you, face down, feet in the air, so your lungs can "drain".
Last time I had pneumonia, I combined that strategy with the hottest salsa I could find (because the capsascin makes your phlegm thinner, go figure). It seemed to help, but oh, I was glad there was noone there to see me!

Every cold I've ever had has gotten really bad and then gotten better.

The Majohng thing might be neat, even while being bizzarre.

If you haven't talked to her doc about the mold you found and her reaction to it, do so. Just in case.

I suddenly had the image of little old ladies doing magic to keep the world right by playing Mahjong... and as one of them is getting ready to kick the buckle, it is time to bring in a new player.

Mind if I ninja this idea? I totally have a story that could use some Mahjong playing Balance keepers.

Hubby's sister keeps talking about teaching me MahJohng. Not so sure I want to learn it, though.

Good luck with the kiddo.
