For a month or more now, we've been seriously considering adding another puppy to our family. We've been keeping an eye out because we really had a good idea what we wanted - a male, baby, shepherd mix. Basically, a little brother for Anubis.

The local shelters haven't had any puppies of late, and we really haven't had good luck with adopting teens, so we've just waited. Since we're out here in the boonies of Arizona, there's not a lot of shelters nearby and not a lot of animals moving through the shelters, but we were patient.

This morning, I saw a husky shepherd mix come up on Petfinder.com at the Ft. Huachuca Animal Control shelter, about 45 minutes away. They were only open from 10 to 2 today, and not on Sunday at all, so we headed over.

We found two adorable brothers... A friendly perky tan fellow that obviously looks husky shepherd, and then his chubby, slower little brother, who's black with white markings.  The Valkyrie fell for the tan adventurous one right off... but the little black guy just looked so sad... and the shelter (bless its heart) was so icky and run down and...

Yeah, you see the end of the story coming already, don't you?

After a few calls to the Viking, and a two-for-the-price-of-one adoption fee offer from the shelter, we now have not one but two new family members. I don't know what the hell I was thinking, but... oh my gods they're adorable.

We're still looking for names. We'd prefer something related to one another, and "us" in nature... God names, historical figure names, city names, mythological creature names, etc... We're open to suggestions.  I'm leaning towards Loki for the tan and Fenris for the black, but I'm getting shot down so far. (That's okay, we also shot down the Viking's suggestion of "Clatu" and "Verata". (Now, if they'd been triplets?...)

Anyway, welcome our new family members...  The Puppies

May I suggest the Dioscuri, or "Sons of Zeus" (really closer to "Zeus's boys")? They are divinities of horsemanship, and protectors of guests and travelers. The brothers, half-mortal and half-divine, share in death and life and rebirth due to generosity from one and humility from the other. They travel the world in secret form, revealing themselves only to the honorable and reverent, but offer free healing to all they encounter. Never do they take the glory for themselves, but always give the glory to Spirit, whether they call him Zeus Thunderer, Jesus or Mithras.

Castor and Pollux as names go are pretty cool, and how many packs of dogs can claim their own term of venery? "Oh, don't mind the Dioscuri... that's how they greet all our guests."

Sorry, that was me...

well if they dont have names.....i showed the pictures to my roommate (whos an avid rabid FullMetal Alchemist fan) and she suggested "hayate" for the black and white one (cause he looks like the dog from the show) and "Hawkeye" for the tan one. Or even Roy for the tan one. or mustang.....>_> But the black one defently is hayate-like. (FYI: Pronounced Hi-a-tey)

I vote for Hugin and Munin. (You have related names, names related to the Aesir, and you keep the Loki thing by naming dogs after birds.)

Naming a pet Loki is Asking For It. Fair warning.

Romulus and Remus? :D It'll be a fair trade. They were humans raised by wolves; they'll be puppies raised by humans. :)

If they were mine and of the hues your little cuties are, I'd go with Ahriman and Ahura Mazda, but I also suspect that's why I'll never be allowed to name either children or pets while I'm with A.J. :D

Re: the Loki thing, that jibes with my experience as well.

I do sort of like Romulus and Remus, though.

Fair warning?

I dunno about that...at the least, I would have to say not always. My husband's sister has a cat named Loki, and it is the most mild-tempered feline I've ever seen in my life. It even suffers their two-year-old daughter to yank on his ears, and it's never scratched or bitten her. Nor is he prone to illness, mischief, or the like.

Really? Huh. That's literally the first animal with that name I've heard of - of nearly a dozen, give or take a few - who hasn't been a hellion. :D

The most terrifying one had to be the ferret. Oh, what a monster. He was a master at finding peoples' keys (climbing hanged up coats to get at them in pockets, if necessary) and then sprinting for the balcony on a fourth-story apartment. Gods forbid that door was open, because if so, he excelled at flinging those keys into the grassy gardens below.

Wicked beast. :)

I like Sasha and Sergei, but I'm a sucker for Russian names for huskies.

Alternatively, Caesar and Tsar, maybe... Although that might be asking for trouble. I named a dog Rasputin once. Never again. :)

Somehow I don't think you need two 2 month old puppies running around your house for a week and a half! :)

Y'know, for all that I'm a cat person, those are some darn cute puppies. We just have one dog, a half-sized white German Shepherd named Cafall who will not stop chewing her own paws (allergies, alas).

This is easy. You already have Loki, and a Viking. Now you have two new puppies?

Freki and Geri!

Congrats on the new arrivals.

Ooo, Puppies! We moved into a house this summer and I swore when we did I'd get a dog. But we haven't found the right one yet. I'm hoping for something like what you've gotten, or norwegian elkhound, Shiba-Inu or Akita.

So now I've got the puppy fever again. :)

I must admit, I kinda have to agree with the Viking on this one. But they are ridiculously cute. I am so looking forward to the day we have a place large enough to support a dog of real size.

Ok, so I posted my last before I read all the wonderful name ideas posted by others. But since there were so many wonderful ideas I feel it is my duty to balance out the wonderfulness with a little ridiculous and wildly inappropriate humor (C'mon Jess, tell me you didn't expect it from me).

How about...Wargod and Mankiller? Wonderman and Sidekick? Hubris and Vanity? J. Stephen Worthington and Walter L. Albrecht?
Doompaw and Blacktongue?

Okay, time to stop before I'm removed from the friends list.

Serioously though. Cute puppies and great names.
