The first night we spent in our new house, The Viking awoke to Anubis gently woofing at the screen door off of the master bedroom. He got up just in time to see a pack (herd?) of javelina high-tailing it out of the area. We've been here a few months now and I had not seen one (other than at the High Desert Museum up in Tucson).  Tonight, however, that changed!

Trash is Nummy! (you can see the curved back of one just beyond the trash can)

Here you can see one to the left, just it's hind quarters as it grazes on trash in the knocked-over bin. The other is just barely visible just beyond the hinge of the garbage can lid.

A clearer shot, including the eye-gleam!

At first glance this one looks like just eyes in the dark, but if you look close, you can see the vague shape of his body and legs.  Next time we're going to try to get better lighting, but my poor digital camera just wasn't up to it, flash or no...

We chased them off (Javelina can be pretty nasty) and the Viking cleaned up the considerable mess. But I think this answered the question of the origin of the little bits of poo we kept finding on our walk and driveway was. Definitely not rabbit or deer or dog... Apparently we've got javelina poo!

Whoa... those are bizarre looking... I had to dig into Google images to see what they really looked like, lol... but that's pretty nifty!

Hope they aren't too dangerous! And Happy Early Birthday!

p.s. Hey speaking of your new house, could you email me your address? Miss you guys!! Hugs!

Actually, I've been given to understand that they are NOT very good eating. Stringy, greasy and gamey were all words used to describe them - usually with a really foul expression accompanying that description..
(Sorry! Not Bacon!)

"Beware the Javelina, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

Never heard of 'em. I swear one photo looks like it could be a baby elephant. Surely they're more like raccoons or opossums, the only garbage tycoons I know, for sure.
