Mom stuff behind the cut
So, it's not all champagne and caviar, this being a writer. (Actually, I've only had caviar once, and it was well before I became a writer. I didn't like it much, so I don't think I'll repeat the experience.) Some days it's staying up 'til one to get something finished and waking up at six to get everyone off to school and work. Some days it's reading folks who hate your work and knowing you can't say anything about it. Some days it's not being able to work because the family needs you more.
When the family calls, I answer. That's just the reality of the situation. Sometimes that means dressing up and playing nice-nice with folks in the local community as the Viking's arm candy. Some days it's giving the sick pet rat her medicine and trying not to get peed on. And some days (actually some of the good ones) it's helping the Valkyrie get ready for her next con.
She's taken an interest in cosplay, and so, after a rather lengthy period of negotation about appropriate costuming for 12 year olds (a step which, apparently, many parents at the conventions I've attended have skipped over) we settled on Olette from Kingdom Hearts 2.

The costume was fairly simple, modest, comfortable for a full day of con-going, and relatively easy to put together (important, since I don't have a sewing machine any more.)
We went shopping yesterday, picking up some craft felt and tassles, some wunderunder/applique adhesive, some white clothe for the flowers and a necklace to cannibalize into the necklace and bracelet, a pair of khaki capris and a black under-tank. We couldn't find any orange socks or an orange tank, so we got white ones and some dye.
Today, I dyed the socks and over-tank, cut out and applied the appliques, made the bag (all sewn by hand, with the applique wunderundered on, made the bracelet and necklace and started painting the shoes (not shown, as they're downstairs drying.)
Tomorrow, Autumn's opted to get her hair cut (choosing a style closer to Olette's, which, while I'm neutral on the style, I think will be easier to keep tidy than her current one.) I'll take pictures when she's all duded up!

Date: 2007-03-27 04:14 am (UTC)Costume Appropriateness has been something we've discussed...and often...as Amber and Joy both go to A-Kon annually and like to costume for it. Yay for being a good geek mom!!!

Date: 2007-03-29 01:54 pm (UTC)Yea! I'm just glad Teagan is having fun with her imaginary puppies and pretending to be a puppy (even with washing her paws and scratching her ear (with her foot!) but hasn't asked for costume yet. ;) Soon, I'm sure.
Miss ya'll!
