Stolen from a handful of sources:

This is the problem with LJ, we all think we are so close, and we know nothing about each other. I'm going to rectify it. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me, something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

yes, I'm deliriously happily married to my favorite Viking, Patrick, and have been for just over 11 years now. :)

I don't have one favorite writer... I love Charles De Lint, Elizabeth Moon, Emma Bull, Jim Butcher, Dorothy Parker, Shakespeare...

I've never been to a tea party... But I like tea, and I like parties, and I like dressing up, and I love hats (which, I think, must be an integral part of any tea party...) So I think I would like them.

More questions!

I've only read War for the Oaks by Emma Bull - how are her other books?

I hold tea parties every few months. Would you be interested in an invitation to the next one?

I really enjoyed her book, "Finder", although WftO is /certainly/ my favorite.

I'd love to come to a tea party! :) *all aflutter!*

It looks like you have a very busy schedule, but if you aren't already booked up you are certainly invited to tea on December 19th. :)

Do you have any pets? why did you start writing? What types of film do you like? Whats is your favorite kind of food?

Date: 2004-11-11 06:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
I have never really considered myself a pet person... However, despite that, I now have a dog (Anubis), and three cats (Rogue, WrongWay and Nuit)...

I started writing (professionally) because Pat didn't want to be on the "Work til you die" program, and while his salary supports us very comfortably, we are 37 and 42 respectively, and would like to retire while we are still young enough to enjoy the rest of our lives together, and with enough resources to do so. I tried working an office job, but it was just not possible for me to make enough money doing it to offset the time it took away from my role in "family support"...

I like films with cool costumes. Not just for the costumes, but it seems to be the common thread through all my favorite movies... Dangerous Beauty? Cool Italian Courtesan costumes. The Last Samarai? Cool Japanese costumes. Taming of the Shrew? Cool Shakespeareian costumes. X-men/Spiderman/Hellboy? Very cool costumes. I'm a geek, what can I say?

Mmmm. Food good. :) I love love love kalamata olives. They are a goodness. So is chocolate, sushi and frappacino (toffee nut or carmel, preferably). I've also recently discovered a love for hot wings. Especially Applebee's boneless ones. So, who knows. :) I like food like I like people. A wide variety and in large quantities. :) I can find something to love in just about every dish. :)

Green... a dark hunter green, rich and soothing.

I'm a sagittarius sheep...

Oh, I love songs too much to have one favorite. :) I don't even have a favorite /genre/. Right now, my top listened to are "Bring on the Men" from the J&H soundtrack, "One Hot Mama" (country), "Come to my Window" (Melissa Etheridge), "Original Sin", "Tan Solo Tu" and (strangely enough) "Freak a Leek".

Baskin and Robbins Daquiri Ice for "going out"...

Probably Pecan Praline for "from the store". :)

Where would you go if tomorrow someone handed you a roundtrip ticket to anywhere in the world?

Date: 2004-11-11 09:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
Wow... Wow...

I'd love to go back to Hawaii, but not without Pat. It was too much fun snorkelling and such with him and Autumn, and wouldn't be nearly as much fun on my own...

If it was just one ticket, I'd probably go to Denver. My "just finished the rough draft" book is set there, and I'd like to look around first hand, see the plants, feel the climate, smell the air...

It's not my "most want to visit it" place, but it's the place I most want to visit if I couldn't take Pat with me right now (since Olympia doesn't have an international airport).

How difficult was it to actually set words on paper on the way to writing a novel? Is it something you've done before? I've heard Werewolf mentioned. Is that what's next?

I hadn't ever written a novel-length piece until my proposal for In Northern Twilight was accepted. I was very intimidated. It was hard, but no harder than any other long project, I think... I consider myself very lucky to have a great editor (Carl Bowen) and a very wonderful project manager for the first stages of the book (Philipppe Boulle).

I just turned in the rough draft on a book that will be the second in the Werewolf: The Forsaken fiction series. :)

At this point? Many evil things...

That's the problem with going off the low carb diet for a weekend. When you go back on, it's /really/ hard to fight the carb cravings. And I have a sweet tooth anyway. :)

Hi Luv!
What is the name of the first book that you felt an emotional connecton to? How old were you?
Are there any life goals that you plan to achieve, besides writing of course?
What steps are you taking towards them?
If not, why not?

Date: 2004-11-12 01:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
Well, the first "grownup" book I was ever given was a collection of Andrew Lang's fairy tales. It was hard cover, beautiful and I still treasure it. That was quite an emotional connection (it really spoke to me of being both "grown" and still entranced with the world of magic and light.

As for pure content, Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, most likely, and for the same sorts of reasons. Life can be so mundane, so many people go through it with goals and drives that mean nothing in the long run...

Which kind of leads us to the last questions... My life goals are to be happy, to be responsible enough to hedge my bets on being able to be happy, to help other folks be happy and to do more good than harm in the world. I try very hard to live this every day.

When and how did polyamory become a part of your life?

Oh, and could you explain what the phrase "heart of the moon" means to you?

Date: 2004-11-13 08:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
Shortly before or after Pat and I got together. I think we both realized that we were more than capable of loving more than one person without it in any way lessening how we felt about each other. The how? Now, that's an ongoing almost 15 year story... Like any strong relationship, we've just been growing and adapting together as we grow and adapt as individuals.

It's Hearth of the Moon... When we first belonged to our first SCA household (Rogue's Haven), we wanted a designation for our little part of it. Our family, and the people who were connected to us, but not necessarily directly to Rogue's Haven. Mongolian households are arranged by Ordo (camps), which contain many hearths... so we chose to designate our part of the household our "hearth". Both Pat and I are very drawn to the moon and it's mutable changing forms (see the question above) so we chose to identify our hearth as "The Hearth of the Moon".

What is your favorite: Book, music, and movie? Why?

Date: 2004-11-13 08:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
I love Elizabeth Moon's Deeds of Paksenarrion series... But I couldn't limit my favorite /anything/ to just one! :)

I love Flash Girls for music, but also Indigo Girls and Danny Carnahan and Heather Alexander and Gordon Lightfoot and Sir Mixalot and and and...

My current favorite movie is probably The Last Samarai, but it's a momentary favorite... I adore things like Taming of the Shrew, Princess Bride, silly Disney movies, I loved Sean of the Dead, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead, Shakespeare in Love... Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Count of Monte Cristo... *happy sigh* Too many good things in the world, I could never pick just one.

That pretty much sums up my views on life, don't you think?

What interests do you have besides roleplaying?

Date: 2004-11-13 08:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
Well, I'm an avid reader and writer. I love baking, cooking, food preservation (jam... mmmm.) I like to sew (by machine and by hand), to crochet, and to make felt. I love to dance (haven't done ballroom in ages, but love it as well as country-dance, line dance and modern rock shimmying...). I love video games (especially world building ones like Sims, ZooTycoon (which almost prevented my first book from getting written!), Civilization, Age of Mythology, etc. I love movies, but I prefer to go out to see them rather than watching them at home, because I find it hard to sit still long enough to watch one at the house. I love to sing (I was recorded on my first CD earlier this year), and I'm learning to play the harp (slowly).

I love going to the zoo, or roadtrips, and I /love/ flying. I have a /very/ soft spot for penny and nickle slotmachines (I'm just too darned cheap for the more expensive ones!)

I also love games... card games, board games, strategy games, word games. I love comic books and graphic novels, although I haven't kept up with them in ages. I love entertaining (have folks coming over for games and munchies tonight!)

Yeah, I've got a /ton/ of interests other than role playing! :)

What was the fist movie(if any) that made you cry? Is there any talent that you don't have that you wish you did?

Date: 2004-11-15 10:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
Coal Miner's Daughter... I don't even remember why now, but it was the first real "grown up" movie I saw in the theater, and I remember crying during it.

By talent, I'm going to assume you mean "ability to do something naturally"... I would say drawing/painting. I don't create graphic representations very well, which is one of the reasons I'm a writer, not an artist. :) More esoterically, I wish I had a talent for just being in the moment like some folks can be. I'm very "go-go-go", have a hard time slowing down and just enjoying.

I'd also like to be able to shape shift, but that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

Everyone has a place of peace inside them. That place you see in your mind that calms and soothes you. What does yours look like?

Oh, and what is the flight speed of a swallow?

Date: 2004-11-18 08:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jesshartley.livejournal.com
I think that my place of peace is more of the "eye of the hurricane"... I am not good at just "being". I prefer to keep constantly working on projects, etc... it just feels more "right" to me.

So my place of peace is that center where everything is on track, each project is coming along nicely, and I know I'm going to make my deadlines. :)

African or European? Laden or Unladen?
