Jess, take it from someone who has gotten alot of 3rd degree sunburns. Get some wash clothes (preferably something lighter if you have it) and mix water (5 parts) with Vinegar (1 part). Soak the wash cloths in the water/vinegar mix and let them sit on the burn. It will a)make it feel better and b)help keep it from blistering to badly, if at all. Follow up with some aloe and repeat as often as you'd like. I used to spend whole nights with this stuff on my back to make me feel better when I'd get burned like that. You might also want to try soaking a light t-shirt in the mixture and wearing it.
I've gotten so sun-sensitive that I'm routinely putting sunscreen on every morning after my shower. If I think I'm going to be out in the sun, I break out the really heavy duty stuff. I don't burn as bad as you and Gwen, but I get brown blotches all over if I don't remember the sunscreen, and I'm really sick of them.
Even as a desert dweller prone to err on the side of putting sunscreen on even if I might not need it, I still forget on occassion. A few weeks ago I was going to pull weeds in the front yard for "less than an hour" so I didn't put any on. Of course "less than an hour" became three and a half hours, so I burned nicely, especially tender on the backs of my legs.
I was going to suggest a cool vinager bath, but the cloths work, also if you have some peppermint oil add a drop. When you get the Aloe, go for the kind with lidocaine it helps the pain more. If you think it is a good idea try a tylonal/advil combo. Drinking lots of water and Gatorade will help it to heal.
Banana boat no rub spray sunscreen is the best of the comertial brands, it works very well and dosen't have the greasy lotion feel (drys quick, very handy).
Brings you sweetend peppermint tea in your cool bath.
Yes, literally allergic to the sun. I use white vinegar mixed with the coldest water I can stand. It sucks the heat and the sting out of the burn. I follow that with a thick layer of pure aloe gel. Repeat often.

HYDRATE. That burn will rob the rest of you of available water.
Careful, moist fuzzies!! :)
